Jets Fumes Run Empty...

By Ryan Foray
The New York Jets should not feel like this season was a failure.
Rookie Coach Rex Ryan and Rookie Quarterback Mark Sanchez passed all expectations by getting the Jets to the AFC title game, its first appearance since 1998. The Jets, who were all but out of the playoff hunt almost 4 weeks ago, shocked the world by not only making it to the playoffs, but defeating the Bengals and the Chargers along the way, two division winners that many had on paper as possible Super Bowl Winners.
The Indianapolis Colts were pushed almost to the limit against the number one defense in the league, but miscues by the Jets’ secondary and two long missed field goals by Jay Feeley are making the Jets watch the big game as fans and not on the sidelines.
I do think however that this will not be the last time the Jets are going to be in the mix. Next season the Jets will play the same rugged defense they have played all season. Mark Sanchez will be more comfortable in the starting position, so do not be surprised if the Jets pull off ten wins next season.
It’s hard to preview how the Jets will be next season, but it will be rest assured that Fireman Ed will have many happy chants flying through the new Giants Stadium.

AFC/NFC Title Game Previews/Predictions

By Ryan Foray

So we have our conference Championship games set up for tomorrow. You arguably have three of the best quarterbacks on our time playing this weekend to determine who gets a birth for Super Bowl XLIV.
Oh, and there’s Mark Sanchez.
Tomorrow’s battles have numerous storylines that could play out when it’s all said and done and the Conference Titles are awarded.
Think about it...Peyton vs. Brees, Peyton vs. Favre, Favre’s Old team (Jets) vs. Favre’s new Team…a classic battle between Favre and Manning. Then there’s the Underdog Jets and the number one defense against the favored Saints and the number one offense. These are sportswriters’ dream articles.
The Action kicks off with the Indianapolis Colts hosting the New York Jets (3:00PM CBS), and then followed by the New Orleans Saints hosting Minnesota Vikings (6:40 PM FOX). It will be a weekend of firsts, with the Superdome holding its first NFC title game in its historic run, the first time that both AFC and NFC title games are played in domes in the same year.
The Saints are looking for its first Super Bowl berth.
The Vikings are looking to return to the big game since Super Bowl XI.
Jet Fans have been waiting for one since Super Bowl III.
Manning is looking for a second Ring.
Tomorrow’s going to be fun.
My preview for both games are very simple—the quarterbacks. If the jets hadn’t knocked off the Chargers last week, All four top voted MVP candidates would be playing, a possible first in NFL history. Instead, Phillip Rivers will be watching from home as he sees Manning face off against Rookie Mark Sanchez. There’s also this small matchup —I think it’s called Favre vs. Brees.
Jets at Colts:
Mark Sanchez is only the second rookie in NFL history to win his first two starts in the playoffs. Joe Flacco did it last year and lost in the AFC title game, so can Sanchez do the impossible? For the Jets’ strategy, it won’t change like it hasn’t the past two games. Hard blitzing defense and relying heavily on the running game. They can’t let Manning have any time in the pocket to throw the ball. If the Jets can keep the game out of Sanchez’s responsibility and have the running game give the edge on time of possession, then the Jets could have the beginnings of a great upset.
The Colts will probably do a lot of short passes to establish the passing game early. Getting the ball into the young receivers will push the jets from an eight-man line to a four-man line very quickly. Darelle Revis is only one man so the Colts will have to nit-pick New York’s Secondary.
I can honestly see this game coming down to the wire until the 4th quarter. The Colts will push and jets O-line enough so that Sanchez might have to get pressured into throwing the ball too early. This game is so hard to predict because the Jets are hard to predict. They have been an up and down team every game and every half. They started out slow last weekend and then pushed the speed limit to critical levels. I think the Colts will expose some flaws and manning will be going to his second Super Bowl.
COLTS 24, JETS 14.
Then again, I have my love for Rex Ryan….ok ok.
JETS 24, COLTS 21.
Don’t be surprised if either score happens.
Vikings at Saints: This is honestly going to be a fun game to watch. It will probably be as fun as the Packers/ Cardinals game. I don’t think the same amount of scoring will happen, but it will sure be close.
The Vikings need to bring back the running game that we saw earlier in the year. Adrian Peterson and Fred Taylor will probably get going in the game, but it will come down to if they can get it started early. The Cardinals last weekend broke the game open with an 83 yard touchdown by Hightower, so the Vikings need to start fast too. The only difference is that they need to convert early and keep it going all game long. Favre was superb last weekend against Dallas, so it will be hard to top the performance he had with this game. He will have to spread the ball out a lot more if Percy Harvin isn’t going to suit up for this game. If Harvin does play, it gives Favre another dangerous target.
The Saints will have to do what they did last weekend. Score quickly and don’t stop until the final whistle blows. Drew Brees will also have to push the ball around to various targets in the entire game. The Vikings will be looking to pressure Brees like they did to Romo last weekend, so don’t be surprised if Brees is playing a quick snap count. Reggie Bush showed us last weekend why the Saints picked him in the draft. He just has the explosiveness that can change the entire game. He will have to do it again this week if he wants Saint Fans dancing on Bourbon Street tomorrow night.
This game will be fun to watch as a football fan. I think it will come down to the wire or if someone makes a mistake. Brett Favre’s last pass in the NFC title game history was an Interception. I think it will haunt him a little bit but he should have a good game.
However, I think the Saints will want it more. New Orleans has heard the critics of them falling apart in the final weeks of regulation, and I think they will shut the critics up tomorrow. Pack your packs Saints Fans, you’re going to Miami.
SAINTS 31, VIKINGS 20
With that pick, that would mean there are now only Four Teams left to make it to the big game (Texans, Jaguars, Browns, and Lions)
Again, no matter what fan base you are— tomorrow will be fun.

And then there were four...

By Ryan Foray
This past weekend’s divisional playoff round had everything according to plan for the home teams. The Saints, Colts, and the Vikings looked like the teams we saw earlier in the year and why they all were #1 and #2 seeds respectfully in their conferences. Things were also supposed to go this way for San Diego.
Unfortunately, no one told that to the New York Jets.
The Cinderella Story is alive and well still this week as Mark Sanchez and crew are taking the Jets one step away from the Super Bowl. They will face the Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. Meanwhile, a quarterback dream match will take place in the Superdome. Brett Favre will lead the Minnesota Vikings against the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees. With some conversation about it, this Sunday’s matchups feature 3 of the best quarterbacks in the game right now and a rookie who could seriously prove himself in the next few years.
After watching the games this past weekend, here are some of the things you can conclude.
-Brett Favre looks like he could seriously play another 2 to 3 years after his performance against the Cowboys. You give him the protection that he needs and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Favre is playing halfway through this decade.
-Peyton Manning has played almost 15 seasons in the NFL. With the offensive line that he has had over these years…he could play another 10. I could seriously see Peyton Manning have the same durability as Vinny Testevarde, playing so long that people will be wearing throwback jerseys of him when they come out.
-Phillip Rivers is becoming the Dan Marino of our time. (Ouch) Don’t get me wrong, but I think Phillip Rivers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and will probably be continuing his successful career and ending up in the Hall of Fame. However, until he gets that signature win in the playoffs and gets at least to the Super Bowl in the next few years, he will have that great ultimatum of being compared to other greats that can’t get the job done when it counts.
-Continuing on the subject, this was supposed to be San Diego’s Super Bowl year. They have beaten the Colts in the playoffs before, they can score as many points as the Saints can, and their defense could have pressured Favre easily out of the pocket…but once again, they have become a one and done in the playoffs. The Chargers will get back to the playoffs, but it won’t be any better of a chance than it was this year. Still no word yet on if LT will be returning to the Chargers this season too.
-Rex Ryan is slowly becoming a genius when it comes to coaching in the NFL. Let’s face it, when you bring the same intensity to the Jets Defense as you did when you had the Baltimore Ravens under your belt for so long, it’s very impressive…when you make them the #1 defense in the NFL, its genius. Also, for going for it on 4th and one is also giving a lot of trust to your offensive line and running backs. Brian Schottenheimer should also be given massive kudos for making an offensive scheme with a rookie quarterback. Making plays that make him not the major factor in the game right now is perfect for a learning experience while at the same time winning the game.

Jets vs Chargers Preview

By Ryan Foray

Our final match up features Rookie Quarterback Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets taking on a very hot San Diego Chargers. The Chargers have won 11 straight games behind Phillip Rivers and crew. Can San Diego keep the hot streak going over the possible Cinderella Story Jets?

How the Jets will win: Don’t make Sanchez be the major factor of the game. The Jets have the number one rushing attack and the number one defense. If the Jets can use their weapons in the right places, this could be a possible upset. Look for the Darrelle Revis match up on Vincent Jackson. Revis has knocked off many wide receivers off their game. Can he keep it up?

How the Chargers will win: Put the ball in Rivers’ hands and let him lead the team. The emotional ride will help the Chargers go to a 12th straight win and a trip to the AFC title game. Also, look for the Chargers to try to pressure Sanchez to throw the ball and make rookie mistakes.

The True Factor: Rex Ryan’s Offensive Scheme. Will he let Sanchez throw the ball or follow the plan hat worked last week. My guess is stick to what’s working, but if the Chargers are able to shut down the rushing game, this could be trouble for New York.

Prediction: This is a tough one. It should be an easy pick for San Diego to win, but you never know with these pesky Jets. I think San Diego will win this one, but I wont be surprised if New York pulls the upset. Mark Sanchez is a true rookie with his struggles, but there’s truly something special about him. I can see New York being in the playoffs years to come, but it will take time. Look for a good game in San Diego.

CHARGERS 21, JETS 13.

Cowboys vs Vikings Preview

 By Ryan Foray

Probably the best quarterback match up of the entire playoffs. You have Brett Farve, arguably one of the best quarterbacks of our time against Tony Romo, a QB looking to make his mark officially as one of the true elite in the NFL right now. Dallas won its first playoff game in 13 years after destroying the Eagles last week. Can Dallas continue the hot streak and bring another trophy to the heart of Texas? Or does Farve have one more round of magic to bring the Lombardi Trophy to the Blue and Gold? One thing is for certain…if the Vikings do not win the Super Bowl, the season is a complete failure.

Why the Vikings will win: Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin are both big time playmakers. A big score by either of them could change the momentum in the Vikings’ favor. To fully win this game, they have to make sure Farve doesn’t have to do the majority of the work. Number Four is a great QB, but remember how old the man is…attack with the run…an Easy W.

Why the Cowboys will win: Everyone is talking about how it’s going to be Dallas’ offense…but it’s going to come down to the defense playing perfect football. DeMarcus Ware is a true warrior after being taken off the field on a stretcher merely a few weeks ago. Now, he’s playing with an intensity to hoist a trophy in February, and the rest of the D is playing that way as well…look for Dallas to pressure Farve to gun-sling the ball and make him make costly mistakes.

The True Factor: Which QB will show up for both sides? For Dallas, they want the hot Tony Romo that they have seen the past few weeks. He has quieted the critics slowly with each win. Can he keep it up? Or will the Romo that’s been in playoffs past show? For Minnesota, it’s either the Farve in the beginning of the year, or the Farve that has looked like his age.

Prediction: Dallas is hot, but I just don’t see an upset right now. Minnesota has enough star power to knock Jerry Jones’ crew. It’s going to be close…maybe a Farve Comeback? But don’t be surprised if this game is done with some change left in the 4th quarter.

Ravens at Colts Preview

By Ryan Foray

Peyton Manning has lead the Colts to another #1 seed appearance, and is looking for his second ring in Miami this year. He won his 4th MVP this season and judging from how he played this year, there’s no doubt he was the true favorite. The Ravens crushed the Patriots by forcing turnovers all day on Tom Brady and the Patriots, winning 33-14. This probably my favorite matchup of the weekend and I look for it to be a great game.

Why the Colts will win: Peyton Manning is a 4 time MVP. Just persistent passing and strong defense will win it for them.

Why the Ravens will win: If the Ravens can make the Colts turn the ball over like they did to New England last week, this could be the same result. Baltimore needs to take advantage of every possible chance to score. Joe Flacco only completed 4 passes last weekend thanks in part to the defense. He will have to be flawless and push the ball around to their receivers. Look for Homerun playmaker Ray Rice to open up the passing game by gaining extra yards on every rushing play

The True Factor: Can the Ravens Defense be as strong as they were last weekend? The Colts do not make too many mistakes on the offensive side. It will be interesting to see how the Ravens try to force Manning out of the pocket.

Prediction: I see the same intensity as last week for the Ravens. The Colts will come close, but I just see the Ravens making a great run in the playoffs. Low Scoring Game but it will come down to a field goal.

RAVENS 20, COLTS 17

Cardinals vs Saints Preview

By Ryan Foray

Last week the Cardinals were part of the highest scoring playoff game in NFL History…defeating the Packers 51-45, combining for 96 points, 13 Touchdowns, and 1,024 yards. It won’t happen again in the Superdome…but it might be pretty close. Expect some big plays in this game all day.

Why the Cardinals will win: Kurt Warner is he most dangerous when he is given time in the pocket. When you give him time, he will rip your secondary apart piece by piece. Anquan Boldin is questionable for this weekend, but if Steve Breaston and Early Doucet spread the secondaries out and take pressure off of Larry Fitzgerald, look for another repeat of Warner’s performance.

Why the Saints will win: Drew Brees is due for a major playoff win to show the world why he is truly one of the best in the League right now. Like Warner, he can rip secondaries when you give him time in the pocket. The difference between the two teams is that the Saints’ secondary will play tight on the Cardinals Receivers all day. If they can force the Cards to try to beat them with just the running game, it could be game over if it becomes a one dimensional offense.

The True Factor: How healthy is Anquan Boldin? He missed the entire last weekend due to leg injuries. Look to see if he will play a big part in the offensive schemes.

Prediction: I don’t see a true shootout like last week, but there will definitely be points on the board when it is all said and done. I don’t see an upset though. The Saints are hungry for a title win, and after faltering in the end of the regular season, look for the Saints Defense to awake and knock Warner around in the 2nd half.

Again…I hope this is not Kurt Warner’s final season. A Great Player and person in general, but there will not be another NFC title for the Cards, at least not this year.

SAINTS 28, CARDINALS 20

NFL Divisional Playoffs...Whats Home Field Advantage?

By Ryan Foray

The Road to Miami Has left us with eight teams remaining in the NFL playoffs, and this weekend should be no different with fast paced action.

The Divisional Playoff Round will start off in the Superdome as the NFC West Champion Arizona Cardinals take on the New Orleans Saints, the Number One Seed in the NFC(4:30PM; FOX). Then the AFC’s Number One Seeded Indianapolis Colts take on the Baltimore Ravens (8PM; CBS).

The Action will continue as Bret Farve and the NFC Central Champion Minnesota Vikings will host the NFC East Champion Dallas Cowboys, and finally, the New York Jets will bring Rookie Quarterback Mark Sanchez back to Southern California, only this time they face Philip Rivers and the AFC West Champion San Diego Chargers.

Although home field advantage should be seen a given at times, last year’s results don’t play too much favor to the teams coming off the bye week. Only one home team won last year in the divisional playoffs (The eventual Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers). Also, the past two NFC champions have not been a #1 or #2 seed. After seeing this year’s Wild Card Weekend, anything is possible.

And I mean Anything.

Shame on Lane Kiffin..

By Ryan Foray

We always see it during this time of the year in sports. After the long seasons, coaches are fired, hired, resign, retire, etc. Pete Carroll is now back in the NFL with Seattle, and now to top that, Lane Kiffin is now the new head coach at USC after one year in Tennessee.
I can understand Pete Carroll taking the opportunity to be back in the big leagues, but my god Lane Kiffin…where’s the loyalty?
A year ago you were talking about how you wanted to build Tennessee back to its glory days, wanting to “sing Rocky top all night long after they beat Florida next year.” You wanted to take part in the tradition of the Vols. You wanted to bring the Vols back to its glory days, and lead them to be a top contender in the BCS standings for years to come. What changed your mind?
Sure, you were an assistant coach and Offensive Coordinator at USC, so I can see the connections. Unfortunately, you going to a “dream job in Southern California” is leaving a bitter taste in Tennessee’s mouth.
Once again, Kiffin is in the middle of a coaching controversy. Maybe Al Davis wasn’t crazy when he fired Kiffin from the Raiders.
The biggest loser of course is going to be the Tennessee Football program. Their top recruit has announced he plans on transferring due to Kiffin’s decision.
No word yet on who will be the new head coach for the Vol’s (maybe pay a few extra zero’s to Bill Cowher’s name perhaps?) , but rest assure that when it comes to scheduling out of conference in the few years for both teams, the entire state of Tennessee would love to get a chance to swipe at Kiffin.

Wild Finish for the Wild Card Weekend

By Ryan Foray
One weekend down and now it’s down to eight teams left in the NFL playoffs.
Man. Where do I begin?
The Rookies emerge for New York? Dallas ending a playoff drought? How about the Patriots getting mauled by the Ravens’ Defense?
And then there was the track meet in Arizona.
Even though three of the four matchups during this weekend’s wildcard were total blowouts, our final game earlier this evening left us believing we saw probably the best football game of the season.
Let’s Review Shall We?
1. The New York Jets are no longer the least favored team. They showed why they are the number one running game and rushing game in this league. They came to Cincinnati and pushed around the Bengals all day long. Yes the Bengals missed two crucial field goals, but they were pretty much dominated for the majority of that game. Next Week vs. San Diego could be interesting
2. The Dallas Drought is over! They have finally gotten the monkey off their back and defeated the Eagles for the third time this year, a hard feat in itself. The Defense swarmed McNabb and company and just dominated both sides of the ball. Dallas might start to be a favorite to make a run to the big game in Miami.
3. Is the Dynasty in New England over? It looked like it today as the Ravens Defense was truly relentless in that game. When you’re opposing Quarterback Only Completes 4 Passes in a Game...and the offense STILL SCORES 33 POINTS ON YOU…there is a big problem right there. Brady threw 3 interceptions and was knocked down constantly the entire game. The Ravens Running game should also get a pat on the back as well. Ray rice has continued to show why he will be a top rusher for years to come. Add Willis McGahee into it and that’s a rushing attack that can be very hard to shut down.
4. Arizona and Green Bay put on an offensive show.
Or maybe just a terrible defensive act. Either way, it was fun to watch as a football fan. The Cardinals got very lucky that they were able to sneak that win in, because Green bay had all the momentum going into overtime. We should be talking about how Aaron Rodgers is the next elite QB to surface into the NFL world, but the pass on the first play of overtime wasn’t on the mark...and the rest is history. Also good to see Kurt Warner will get possibly another game to play in his career (unless he changes his mind)
Overall 3 out of 4 on predictions correct…not too bad...now the big dogs will be looking to play after a full weeks’ rest. Look for previews later in the week!

Packers vs Cardinals Preview

By Ryan Foray
The Final matchup in the Wildcard Round is once again a rematch from week 17. The jets and the Cowboys both handled business two weekends in a row convincingly, and the Packers look to do the same. Green bay is coming off a 33-7 knockout win over the Cardinals, and they will have to do it again in Arizona. The Reigning NFC Champions are looking to make another run to the Super Bowl, and if Kurt Warner to Larry Fitzgerald can be a magical combo as it was last year, today’s game could be a lot of fun.

Why the Packers will win: New York and Dallas handled business…so why not? Aaron Rodgers is progressing to become a great QB in this league. He will not be a Brett Farve, but bringing a Lombardi trophy back to title town would not be bad at all for the Green Bay Fans. Look for the Packers offense to try to be relentless. Plus, if their defense can keep up their psycho formation like it has all season, things could get ugly for the Cardinals offense.
Why the Cardinals will win: Larry Fitzgerald will have to get open and get open quick. Anquan Boldin is more than likely out for today, and this will put some pressure on Kurt Warner to get the ball spread out. Also look for the Cardinals to push their combo on the running game.

Surprise factor: The Amount of Scoring. I’m calling this game a track meet. Look for the ball to be flying all day and don’t be surprised if you see at least 45 points between the two teams by halftime.

Prediction: Before I make a prediction, let me talk about Kurt Warner. After hearing the reports this morning that Kurt Warner may retire after this season, I really hope that the Cardinals do not lose today. Warner is one of my all time favorite players to watch. I remember being a kid watching him have that magical season with the Rams, leading them to a Super Bowl title. He should have three in my opinion, only losing to a Field Goal by Adam Vinatieri and a Santonio Holmes touchdown grab. Getting to the Super Bowl is hard, but getting there as the starting quarterback for two different teams is amazing. He has 2 MVPs and has been a true gentle figure in the NFL. He will be in Canton, Ohio when it’s all said and done.
As for the game, I do see the Packers winning the track meet. A little part of me will smile if the Cardinals win, but either way it should be a great game.
Packers 38, Cardinals 33

Ravens vs. Patriots Preview

By Ryan Foray
Another day of playoff football begins with a matchup in Foxboro. The Patriots look to make another playoff run as the AFC East Division Champs, only this time they will have to do it without WR Wes Welker. Welker was injured last week vs. Houston and is done for the year (Knee Injury). The Ravens on the other hand look to pick up where they left off last year. 2nd Year QB Joe Flacco almost took the Birds of Baltimore to the promise land, getting to the AFC title game only to lose to the Super Bowl Champion Steelers. Now after clinching the sixth seed on the final day of regular play, head Coach John Harbaugh will look to have his team fired up come kickoff.
Why the Ravens will win: Year after year the Ravens Defense is always talked about being the boundary for a good football team on that side of the ball. Ed Reed and Ray Lewis will have to get their teammates fired up for a full 60 minutes. Look for the Ravens to stop the Patriots Running game, and if the passing game makes any turnovers, it might be early by the 3rd quarter.
Why the Patriots will win: Um…you’re starting a quarterback by the name of Tom Brady. I don’t think I need to say more on the passing game. Wes Welker might be out for the reason but you also have Randy Moss out there, which makes more than enough problems for the Ravens Secondary. This won’t be a huge scoring game, but look for Moss to get at least one big play today.
Surprise Factor: The Patriots Running Game
We all know about the Brady and Moss Combo, but are the Patriots more than a One-Dimensional Team while playing offense. If the Patriots can’t pick up the short yards, this could put more pressure on Brady to make plays. Look to see if the Patriots can keep a consistent running game
Prediction: This game could honestly go either way pending on one or two plays. Momentum is always a key factor when playing football. I’m going with the upset in this game though. I think that the Patriots defense isn’t what it used to be in years past. I’m going with the Upset…setting up two great games for next week in the AFC.
Ravens 20, Patriots 14.

One Half Done in Cincinnati

By Ryan Foray
After watching this first half, couple of things I have noted.
Carson Palmer needs to slow down the pace for him to throw the ball…the questionable return of Laveranues Coles and Caldwell will put some question on who else to throw the ball to. Chad OchoCinco has really been covered well.
Mark Sanchez hasn’t been afraid to throw the ball. Edwards should of caught the ball earlier thrown to him. Sanchez should have two touchdowns.
The Jets Defense is catching some momentum…let’s see if they can keep it up going into the 2nd half.
If this keeps up the Jets might be heading to Indianapolis.

Eagles vs Cowboys Preview

By Ryan Foray
The Cowboys swept the Eagles in the regular season and won the division officially after their 24-0 blowout against the birds. The Eagles had a chance to clinch homefield advantage up until at least the NFC title game. Now they will have to be road warriors if they want to hold the Lombardi Trophy. The Cowboys have a lot of momentum and look to be a major favorite to make a run.
How the Eagles will win: Donovan McNabb will need his WR’s to get open and fast. Last week the Eagles had many chances to change the momentum in that game and blew it. Look for DeShawn Jackson and Jerry Maclin to show up to play today
How the Cowboys will win: Tony Romo, you have a lot on your plate today son. The Cowboys have not won a playoff game since 1996. Look for the defense try to smother McNabb as well as giving the ball to Felix Jones to make a home run play.
Surprise Factor: Cowboys WR Roy Williams. I could of Said Jackson, Witten, Austin, etc. I’m pulling a 180 instead. I think Williams will try to make a big play now that he’s finally on a playoff team. Watch and see if he really shows up today.

Prediction: The Cowboys have a lot of steam and will continue it. I have this game coming down to the wire. Sorry Eagle Fans, it will be close but no title this year.
COWBOYS 24, EAGLES 23.

Preview: Jets vs Bengals

By Ryan Foray
Amazing how the first game of the weekend will be the highlight game. You have the number one defense and the number one rushing game in the league taking on OchoCinco. Last weekend, the stars aligned for New York as they clinched the final playoff position by rocking the Bengals 37-0.
How the Jets Can Win: Rex Ryan…unleash the beasts. This defense needs to be as gritty as they were last week. Also, let Thomas Jones make the running game as dangerous as it has the entire year. Throw in some Wildcat plays, and hope Sanchez can play NO MISTAKE football.
How the Bengals Can Win: They need a consistent game out of Carson Palmer. Palmer does not have a big playoff win on his resume, with the major highlight of him being taken off the field with help (knee injury 2006 vs. Steelers) If they can stop the Jets running game and make Sanchez try to beat them, look for the Bengals to move on.
The Surprise factor: Jets WR Braylon Edwards. I have a gut feeling that he might have a big game today. If Sanchez can throw the ball downfield and let the man make the jump ball…this might be a start of a wonderful QB-WR connection.
Prediction: The Jets smoked the Bengals last week, and even destroyed their backups. I’m going to believe Rex Ryan’s “favorites” quote…at least for one week.
JETS 23, BENGALS 14.

Let the games begin!

By Ryan Foray
Today marks the beginning of the NFL playoffs, with both games today rematches from last week. The New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals will battle it out in the early game, while Philadelphia Eagles take on the Dallas Cowboys later tonight. Tomorrow will conclude with the Baltimore Ravens taking on the New England Patriots, and the Green Bay Packers facing the Arizona Cardinals (another rematch form last week).
This week is going to be good.
All three games were on blowout status last week, but then again the starters were taken out of the games towards the end of the game on the losing teams. Look for updates and predictions soon to follow.

Crushing the Heart of Texas

By Ryan Foray
There needs to be a playoff system in the College Football world, but I know one thing that was official last night. The Alabama Crimson Tide is officially national champions.
And their defense is scary good.
You can make the case that Colt McCoy was injured in the first quarter and all hope was lost for the Texas Longhorns. However, there were a few key plays that could have changed momentum and helped the Longhorns to a National Title.
2 Kickoff Recovers, the Interception on a trick play by the Alabama Punt Team, the dropped passes (including the Malcolm Williams drop in the end zone. The next play would be an interception.)...it can go on and on.
True Freshman QB Garrett Gilbert slightly heated up in the 2nd half with two touchdown drives combining for 124 yards. Alabama would not register a first down in the entire third quarter. The momentum was starting to come back to the Longhorns. The magic from the days of Vince Young leading his offense to the promise land was in possible sight.
And then Alabama’s Defense woke up. Sacking and causing the fumble in the 4th quarter that put the final nail in the coffin.
Would there be a different story if McCoy was healthy? Possibly so, but that’s for people to think and wonder.
For right now, the Alabama Crimson Tide finished the season 14-0, with the best defense in the country. Nick Sabin is the first coach to ever win a BCS title for two different schools. (LSU in 2003,) Mark Ingram is one of the best running backs in the country.
And personally, the SEC is the best conference in the country today.

And the National Champion is?

By Ryan Foray
The Texas Longhorns and The Alabama Crimson Tide play tonight for the BCS National Championship in the Rose Bowl. This is what football wants to see…the number one ranked team in football against the number two team in football. Tonight, we shall have a national champion when the clocks reach zero.
Or are we? Will we have the true national champion crowned in Pasadena, California?
No credit is being taken away from either squad. I would personally think that both teams’ resumes show that they are true candidates for holding the crystal trophy this year. There would be a true national champion…if I didn’t watch the other 33 bowl games before hand.
Then again…it is the BCS polls that make the champion.
It’s been said over and over again that College Football should introduce a playoff system. That way the smaller schools such as Boise State and TCU are playing for titles and not bragging rights in the other BCS Games. When you have our national government pushing for a playoff system, maybe it’s time to seriously look at it.
Sure it is an honor for most of the smaller schools just to make it to one of the major games. But a playoff system would give a fair chance for everyone.
Take example the NCAA Division I Football Championship for the subdivision. Learn from their trial on crowning a national champion.
It might take a few years, possibly decades in order to make it happen. Then again, anything is possible.
Until then, look for Nick Sabin and his players to battle Mack Brown and his crew to the final whistle.

Prediction: The Alabama Defense will look hungry stopping Colt McCoy’s passing game. Also look for Mark Ingram to try to attack the line and push for extra yards on every play. If Greg McElroy can play mistake prone for 60 minutes, the SEC will have another crystal football to their resume as possibly the best conference in football.
Score: Crimson Tide 33, Longhorns 24.

The Road to Miami Begins...

By Ryan Foray
17 Weeks have come and gone, and the NFL regular season has come to a close. Now the march to Land Shark Stadium begins for 12 teams.
The NFL Playoffs begin this weekend with the Wild Card Round. Three of the four matches being rematches from Week 17; The Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Jets, The Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, and the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals; The Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots are a rematch from Week 4.
The term “lightning never strikes twice” seems to play in favor of those who lost last week. In the current playoff setup, a rematch from Week 17 to Wild Card Weekend has happened only nine times. Only 4 times has a team won both games.
That might be questioned after this week’s overall performance of the losing squads. All three games were blowouts (Jets 37-0, Cowboys 24-0, and the Packers 33-7).

Agent Zero to Zero Playing Time

RICHMOND, VA--Just days into the New Year, a new decade, and here we go again folks…another black eye for the NBA.
Another professional athlete that plays a children’s game for millions of dollars has caught himself in possible legal disputes. He has been given a punishment by his profession and will possibly face judicial consequences. This time, it’s Gilbert Arenas.
The Washington Wizards Point Guard has been suspended indefinitely by NBA Commissioner David Stern and possibly the entire season. Arenas had a dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton that lead to Crittenton and Arenas apparently drawing guns at each other in the Wizards Locker Room.
Making matters worse, Arenas and teammates were pictured pointed their fingers at each other as if they were “hand guns” during pregame warm-ups against the Philadelphia 76ers. This seemed to be the final straw that broke the camel’s back for Stern, making the decision to suspend Arenas.
My question to Arenas; you’re a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. You were expected to make $16.2 million dollars this season, the second year of your 6-year, $111 million contract you signed. You have watched various athletes be part of the lime light in a negative way; Vick, Burgess, Woods, Pac man-Jones.
Do people never learn?
Before this incident, Arenas was the quiet player during the preseason that looked more focused than ever before in his career. He finally seemed healthy after only playing a combined 15 games over the last two seasons to injuries. This was going to be the season where Arenas would turn around all the talk of being “injury prone”. He leads the Wizards in scoring (22.6 ppg) and assists (7.2 apg). Now he’s on the verge of facing many legal charges outside of the league; with the potential of his playing career done.
The Wizards are 11-22 and in last place in the Southeast Division. With the loss of their leader, this might crush any hope of the Wizards turning their season around. There is even talk that the Wizards will be voiding Arenas contract.
Arenas apologized to Stern, the NBA and the Wizards organization, saying that “I feel very badly that my actions have caused the NBA to suspend me, but I understand why the league took this action. I put the NBA in a negative light and let down my teammates and our fans. I am very sorry for doing that.” (Courtesy of ESPN)
While the question may be will we ever see Arenas back in a Wizards uniform again, we know that the NBA is still trying to make its image back to the family friendly entertainment it once was with the Days of Magic, Bird, and Jordan. The black eyes are still healing from The Palace Brawl in 2004 and the Tim Donaghy scandal. Now it looks like Arenas threw a right hook to the temple of the league.
